Panama, as expected, successfully
defended its crown as kings of
volleyball in Central America, but it
was clear during the Norceca-E FIVB
Men’s World Championships that the gap
that separates them from the rest of
its regional neighbors is as narrow as
its famed water canal.
The Panamanians had to play five-set
contests in four of their six outings,
and three times they needed to wipe
out 0-2 deficits before prevailing.

Panama won by erasing a 0-2 deficit
and in this opportunity the victory
over Costa Rica sent The Canal Boys to
the third round of the FIVB 2010 Men’s
World Championships.
The Panamanians stunned the Costa
Rican team with their come-from-behind
attack for the 24-26, 21-25, 25-19,
25-9, 15-10 triumph. They joined USA
and Dominican Republic in Norceca-G
phase next August. The smash of
Donaldo Ureña, who led his side with
22 points.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 5, 2008.-
Honduras defeated Belize in straight
sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-15) in a match
featuring the two winless teams in the
Norceca-E FIVB Men’s World
Championships second round. The
winners outblocked their opponents
12-3.
Honduran Fabrizzio Matamoros scored 16
points and Wilfredo Lopez added 12,
including six blocks. Honduras
finished with 1-5 win-loss record
while Belize went home with 0-6 mark.
“The team showed a fighting spirit
throughout the tournament and it is
good to go home on a positive note,”
said Felix Sabio.

Costa Rica advanced to key match
against Panama on Friday after
defeating host Nicaragua (25-17,
23-25, 25-20, 25-22) in the last match
of Day Six in the Norceca-E FIVB Men’s
World Championships second round.
Both Costa Rica and Panama have 4-1
win-loss record, the same as Guatemala
who face Nicaragua (2-3) in the
closing match of the seven-team
competition.
Pablo Zumbado and Johan Morales each
had 17 points for Costa Rica and Luis
Carlos Sanchez added 11.

second round. The three-time defending
Central America champions won 25-20,
25-22, 25-19.
The Panamanians moved to a big game on
Friday against Costa Rica (3-1) who
later tonight was to play host
Nicaragua. Honduras is now tied with
Belize with 0-5 mark and both teams
meet tomorrow.
Jose Cunningham (11) Ricardo Brown
(10) and Donaldo Urena (10) topped the
balanced scoring of the winners.

beat an opponent of great physical
qualities but limited technique. Twice in
the first set they came from behind and in
the second they erased a 19-22 gap.

Guatemalan with 16 points and Guillermo
Castillo and Oscar Garcia each had 12.
Germaine Audinett and Arvid Arnold had 12
